What is AFT?

AFT stands for Aroma Freedom Technique. It is a step-by-step process for identifying and releasing negative thoughts, feelings, and memories that interfere with reaching our goals and dreams. AFT sets a person’s emotional energy flowing in a positive direction, toward growth and expansion rather than fear, doubt, and paralysis. It uses Young Living Essential Oils to help trigger a permanent shift in how we view ourselves and the world. A Certified AFT Practitioner is trained to guide individuals through the process, though they may not be a licensed therapist or counselor.

How does AFT work?

AFT is rooted in the neuroscience principle of Memory Reconsolidation — the brain’s natural way of updating and releasing old emotional patterns. By holding four aspects of consciousness simultaneously (feeling, thought, physical sensation, and imagination) while inhaling specific essential oils, participants can dissolve the emotional charge associated with memories and limiting beliefs.

Who developed AFT?

AFT was developed by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Benjamin Perkus, Ph.D., combining his understanding of psychology with the use of Young Living therapeutic-grade essential oils to create lasting emotional freedom and personal transformation.

What is in the Memory Release Blend?

The Memory Release Blend is equal parts:

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Stress Away (by Young Living)

Pre-mix in a small labeled bottle for easy use during sessions.

Are essential oils required for AFT to work?

While the 12-step AFT process can be effective without oils (typically over 21 days), using essential oils can shorten that transformation process to as little as 3 days for many people.

Which essential oils do I need for my session?

You will need to have Lavender, Frankincense, Stress Away, Inner Child, Release, and Believe and/or Transformation on hand. I can send you a sample kit for your session or you may order your own essential oils (Young Living Essential Oils only) to use for your session and beyond. Some oils may be substituted. Please reach out to me at least 2 weeks prior to our session to discuss options.

Can I use a carrier oil with the essential oils?

No. Carrier oils cause essential oils to linger longer on the skin, which can interfere with the precise timing needed in the AFT process. Oils should be applied “neat” (undiluted) for best absorption.

Is AFT the same as psychotherapy?

No. AFT:

  • Uses no diagnostic labels
  • Does not treat any condition
  • Requires no intake or history
  • Can be learned and used by anyone
  • Works well alongside other therapies but is not a replacement
How does AFT compare to psychotherapy?

What is the purpose of emotion?

Emotions are the expression of our inner state and often indicate unmet needs. When unexpressed, emotions may create mental and emotional blocks that limit growth and healing.

Is it intrusive to ask for personal memories?

Not at all. Clients are never required to share their memories. The process works whether or not the practitioner knows the content of the memory.

What if no image comes up during a session?

Focus on the physical feeling in your body. Feelings often lead to the memory or the root emotion. Posture or a sense of repeated experience can also guide the session.

What if someone is overwhelmed with memories?

Focus on one memory at a time. Start with one, complete the session, then revisit others later.

Can AFT work if I have no sense of smell?

Yes. Essential oils work at the cellular level, even without the sense of smell. Their chemical constituents still support emotional release and nervous system regulation.

What if I don’t like the scent of the oils?

Hold your hands farther from your nose or smell the oils directly from the bottle if the scent is too strong. Adapt the method to your comfort.

Do I need to be a professional to use AFT?

No. AFT was designed for everyone. Anyone can learn and use the process effectively.

Is it hard to learn?

Not at all. Most people can follow the step-by-step process with ease. The more you practice, the more effective and intuitive it becomes.

Can I use AFT on myself?

Yes! AFT was designed for self-use. It is a powerful tool for clearing emotional blocks anytime you feel stuck.

What is a Certified Aroma Freedom Practitioner?

Certified Practitioners have completed official training with Dr. Perkus or his team and are qualified to guide others through the process professionally.

Is certification required to use AFT?

No. Anyone can use AFT, but only certified individuals may call themselves a Certified Aroma Freedom Practitioner and charge for sessions.

Can students charge for AFT sessions?

No. Only certified practitioners and instructors may accept payment. Students may integrate AFT into an existing practice but may not charge specifically for AFT until certified.

What is the Aroma Freedom Academy?
